The Durham Art Guild is very fortunate to have another matching grant challenge for 2020! We have a BIG goal to raise $5,000 in NEW individual and corporate donations by June 30, 2020. A generous donor of the program has offered to match $5,000 dollar for dollar in support of important program advancements if we reach this goal!

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Creative Mentorship Program is a unique annual partnership between the Durham Art Guild and Student U. Together, our organizations connect high school students in Durham Public Schools with artist mentors from the Durham Art Guild. The program empowers students to discover and develop their creative voices and artistic skills through 20 weeks of one-on-one dedicated work with a professional artist, involvement with the local arts community through monthly field trips, and a culminating exhibition of their projects in the Durham Art Guild Gallery at Golden Belt.

Now in year eight, the Creative Mentorship Program continues enriching the lives of Student U students by helping them to broadly envision their futures. They gain valuable tools for creative problem solving and creative self-expression while building a strong network that will support them in achieving their goals. In 2019 we developed plans to provide resources for students who want to continue their artistic journey beyond the traditional program months. Here is how we are moving forward:

  • We partnered with the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University to enable alumni students to matriculate directly into the Nasher Teen Council.  Two program alumni were recently accepted.
  • We organized regular meet-ups starting this fall for past participants to reconnect and explore. Our first meet-up is scheduled for October where program alumni will attend the NC State Design School Open House event to tour studios and meet current Design School faculty and students.
  • Our next efforts are to match each interested program alumni with a summer internship at a local arts organization after the core program cycle and to develop a flexible arts scholarship fund.
